Richard "Dick" Mankie, 78, of Bagley, MN passed away at his home, April 27, 2010 surrounded by his loving family.
Dick was a steel player for over 50 years. He grew up in Grand Forks, ND down the street from Lynn Anderson (I never promised you a rose garden) He told of Lynn singing at a very young age in their neighborhood! He went to Nashville as a young man and played his steel all over the southwest for State Fairs and the Arizona Hay Ride. He loved to tell about warming up Lil' Jimmy Dickens, Ernest Tubb, and Carl Perkins. Dick played in the officers club band in Guam when he was stationed there in the USAF in the early 50's. He also did a lot of studio work on recordings for various local artists in the Minnesota North Dakota area. Dick always "played" on a Saturday night and would travel 100's of miles in an evening just to make a gig.
